How to choose a trusted gold buyer and avoid scams

The 10-point checklist

1. A real address you can visit and find on a map.
2. A scale display facing you, and the weight shown before and after anything is done.
3. Testing in front of you, with the method named and the result explained.
4. An itemised written slip with gross weight, deductions, net weight, purity, rate and charges.
5. The rate explained: which rate, from where and when fixed.
6. No pressure and no "decide now" deadlines.
7. A receipt for every rupee and every gram.
8. Freedom to say no and take your gold back.
9. Identity checks, which show the business follows the rules.
10. A consistent online presence whose phone number and address match everywhere.

Red flags

• A quoted rate far higher than any public gold rate.
• A request to send gold by courier or money in advance, with no written quote.
• A buyer who weighs your gold out of your sight.
• "The rate will fall in an hour" pressure.
• Charges that appear after you agree.
• No receipt, no slip or no address.
• Anyone asking for OTPs, UPI PINs, card numbers or passwords.
